What does it take to make it as an artist today –much less as an iconoclastic gay woman artist over 50?  A long-time fixture in the Los Angeles art scene, painter and sculptor Eve Wood lives that challenge every day.  Our short documentary “Unfurled” (27 minutes) follows Wood over the course of a year as she creates new work for a solo exhibition that might launch her career to the next level –or not.  “I’ve been in this business long enough to know not to get my hopes up, otherwise it’s a rabbit hole and you’re like, Is anyone gonna like me?” says Wood.  Her work is funny, angry and terrifying, when it tackles hot-button social issues like bigotry, hate crimes, and freedom of choice.  Her work also springs from a deep well of trauma, the source of which she revealed to us for the first time on camera.  “Unfurled” is a candid and intimate portrait of an unrepentant and unapologetic artist.

We’re currently prepping “Unfurled” for it’s launch on the film festival circuit, and seeking distribution. Stay tuned.

Our last independent documentary, OUT LOUD had a successful run on the film festival circuit in 2020-2021. Though the COVID pandemic forced many festivals to postpone, cancel or go virtual, OUT LOUD reached audiences across the United States, in Canada, Asia and Europe.

OUT LOUD is a one-hour documentary about the creation of the Trans Chorus of Los Angeles — the largest group of transgender and gender non-conforming people anywhere in the world who regularly sing together. The chorus was co-founded by a trans woman, Lindsey Deaton, who also served as artistic director for the inaugural season. “I feel my mission is to help these choristers to discover and love and use their voices,” says Lindsey. Classically trained, she has her work cut out for her. Many of her choristers have no musical experience, and some are coping with changes to their vocal range as they take hormones for their transition. The stakes are high for all as they count down the weeks to their public concert debut at UCLA. But it’s not just about the music; it’s about the mission. “We’re here to sing,” says Lindsey, “so that we can change hearts and minds everywhere.”

“Rare is the film that shows trans people existing on their own terms, doing what makes them happy, without the weight of explaining themselves every minute. OUT LOUD is beautiful in its narrative of trans triumph told through trans voices.”

— James Scott, the Austin Chronicle

“Director Gail Willumsen tagged along with the groundbreaking Trans Chorus of Los Angeles for about a year. It was time well spent. OUT LOUD wraps up into the lives of these evolving singers and culminates with the performance of their first concert, guaranteed to bring a tear to your eye.”

— Randy Myers, Mercury News

“The best parts of OUT LOUD are the personal stories such as recovering from reconstruction surgery, overcoming discrimination at work, or dealing with abuse at home or in their personal lives. It all leads to an inspiring, thrilling conclusion, not to be missed.”

— Brian Bromberger, the Bay Area Reporter

“This thrilling, inspirational musical diary is sure to leave you smiling, even if you need a box of Kleenex within reach.”

— Way Out West Film Festival
